After the first raw mockups we need to reach the next level. 3D printings!
For that we have the collaboration of the Kjeller Innovasjon campus and some of their experts in design and mechanics. It’s a great help for us to have some external evaluation and critical thinking because since now we didn’t think of some design problems related with the construction of the robot, mistakes that only people who work everyday on it can find only taking a look on it.
Fascinated. That’s how we feel after visiting the place and discovering our new work table!
Both are open-source electronics platforms, and in prototyping process we can obtain more or less the same results, but they have significant differences.
With the Arduino® card you need to program in a special language, very similar to C++. Can be conected by USB to a computer to transfer the program. It provides a lot of combinations with the servos, actuators and all the components, so for us this is translated like more freedom for design.
On the other hand we had the LittleBits® system. Much easyer and simpler to make it work. We avoid completely the programming step and we can focus on the action. With very intuitive magnet connectors is easy to build an electric system, with all the components. These caracteristics make them perfect for early prototypes but not for final prototypes or robots.
Before the 3D modeling we had to make some mockups, not only to have fun, to see the real size and how the mechanisms we sketched actually works. After a couple of models we realized some mechanical problems that we were not able to see in our drawings.
That is why is so important this step. Do a lot of mockups, different styles, materials, mechanisms…everything is usefull to detect design fails and correct them, and also is funny to do!
Paralel to design and thinking work we started with the project management work. With these post-it we managed to find the gaps in our project following this project. The blind spots are easily detected and we can focus our efforts on the good objectives and challenges.
Why we need to work on challenges that we are not able to find solutions? Or achieve objectives without any challenges?

Here it comes!! After two weeks of brainstorming, we decided our project. Or at least where we have to aim as a team.
Study the armadillo and develop a bionic project involving some features of it.
But what if someone doesn’t know what is an armadillo? Easy, check what is defined in the Encyclopedia Britannica (http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/35045/armadillo).
After the first ideas and sketch we decided to build a bionic armadillo. Looks amazing!!
